The Northwood Community Story

Northwood Community originally opened in 1977 and is now a 44-home, resident-owned manufactured home community.

But that transition didn’t happen overnight. We formed the Northwood Community, Inc. and started on the path to resident-ownership in 2014. That’s when, with the help of NeighborWorks Montana and ROC USA, LLC, we purchased and took control of our community on Nov. 5, 2014.

Now, the resident-owned community (ROC) is not only a successful business, but also a thriving neighborhood.

The process of the resident-owned community buying the land beneath our neighborhood brought this community closer together. Not only do we know far more of our neighbors than ever before, but we look out for one another, too. And with no outside landlord to report to, we’re the envy of other nearby manufactured home communities.

Our Member households elect our Board of Directors, which works with a property management firm and also appoints various volunteer committees to help with special projects, celebrations, community improvements and more. The Board submits a budget every year, and the entire Membership votes on it and any changes to the rent before the budget becomes official. We’re running the business that is our community on our terms, by our rules, for the betterment of ourselves and our neighbors.

Norhwood Community is a well-established community in Ronan, Mont., for people looking for a terrific rural, family-friendly neighborhood in the Flathead Indian Reservation. We are located just an hour south of Kalispell and an hour north of Missoula. We are situated on Highway 93 and just moments away from Flathead Lake. The lake offers boating, fishing, swimming, camping and picnicking. The city of Polson, known for its many cherry orchards and beautiful views of the lake, is 15 minutes away. We also have a large community garden. Local tribal college students help Members prepare and plant the garden, a partnership initiated by one of our own Members. The People’s Center, located five minutes from Northwood, celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the Salish, Pend d’Oreille and Kootenai tribes. We are less than a mile from Salish Kootenai College as well.
Less than a mile from Salish Kootenai College in the Mission Valley, Northwood Community is close to grocery stores, shopping and recreational activities. Wildlife observation, hiking, fishing and photography can be enjoyed in the nearby Ninepipe and Pablo National Wildlife Refuges. Outdoor enthusiasts have endless possibilities available to enjoy the beautiful Mission Mountains, and Glacier National Park is less than a two-hour drive. The amazing natural landscape of Montana is at your fingertips when you live in our community.

Northwood is a well-established community for people who enjoy a welcoming neighborhood in an ideal location.

Ask anyone who lives in Northwood, and we’re sure they’ll tell you it’s a little slice of heaven.
